The Structural dynamics team (under Vehicle Development) is responsible for the requirement setting and validation of requirements of the structural parts of the vehicle for attributes like; safety, strength, endurance, solidity and NVH. CAE is our main tool to support the vehicle development and physical testing is used for the final validation. Currently, there are around 20 people in the Structural dynamics team.
Background and task:
The complete vehicle model in a Multibody Dynamics (MBD) simulation is a key enabler for virtual development in the automotive industry. Due to the wide range of available load cases, this type of simulation delivers loads to several different CAE disciplines like Durability, Solidity, NVH and Vehicle Dynamics.
The complete vehicle model is very complex and contains many advanced features like the tire representation including the contact to the road profile, nonlinear bushings and damper characteristics, bump stops, flexible model of the trimmed body - just to mention a few. Despite this advanced and complex model, some aspects are even more complex in reality. Therefore, we always try to improve the capability of the MBD model by correlation between test and simulation.
A major test has been performed on the robot taxi (cooperation between CEVT and Waymo), where the response of the body, the rear subframe and the electrical drive unit (EDU) has been measured when driving on different test tracks.
The recorded acceleration data can be evaluated with Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) and the Opening Distortion Fingerprint (ODF). Both methods are available as tool bar in Meta.
The main objective of the summer internship is to review all the test results and to perform a first comparison to the results from the MBD simulation. Based on the outcome of this work, there is the possibility to define a Master Thesis (first half of 2025), which aims for a deeper correlation work.
This summer internship offers a unique chance to get an insight into both FEM and MBD.
Who Are You?
- You are currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, preferably a few years into your education. structural dynamics, FEM, MBD, programming (Python), automotive.
- You have a passion for automotive
- You have an understanding of structural dynamics, FEM and MBD.
- You have knowledge of programming (Python)
- Skills in the following software is an advantage but not a must: Ansa, Meta, Nastran, Adams
